Abstract

The purpose of this study was to detect the discriminate ability of the scale of measuring university students’ beliefs towards smoking and its relationship to creativity scale. The sample consisted of 101 college male and female students in the State of Kuwait in the first semester of the year 2014/2015. Moreover, the study aimed to find out differences in students’ beliefs about smoking according to three variables (creative and non-creative) and (smokers and non-smokers) and according to their literary and scientific interests. To achieve the objectives of this study a research tool was developed by the researcher, consisting of 38 items, whose validity and reliability were verified. Also, Torrance Test for Creative Perception (WKOPAY) was used to identify creative and non-creative individuals of the study sample who were selected randomly. The results showed statistically significant differences in the scores of creative students with scientific and literary interests, on the beliefs scale towards smoking and its relationship to creativity, in favor of those of scientific interest. Furthermore, the results indicated significant differences between creative smokers and creative non-smokers, in favor of creative smokers, while there were significant differences between creative smokers and ex-smokers. Moreover, the results also showed that the discriminate function could distinguish between the two groups of students with scientific and literary interests: a higher score on the scale increased the degree of belonging to the group of scientific interests, and the converse is true for the literary interests. Using the discriminate function also helped to distinguish between the two groups of creative individuals (smokers and non-smokers), where a high score on the scale indicated the belonging to the creative smokers group. The converse was true for the creative non-smokers, where reduced low score referred to them. Also, it was found out that the belief scale towards smoking and its relationship to creativity had discriminate ability, which revealed the type of interest and the status of respondent (smoker or non-smoker).The study recommended carrying out further studies on different age groups.
