الملخص
Introduction: Otitis Media (OM) is very common among Yemeni children and adults. One of the hardest challenges in the combat of OM is to detect which microorganisms are the most likely to be involved.
Aim: To identify the common bacteria causing OM and to determine its sensitivity to commonly used antibiotics. Also to identify some factors associated with OM.
Methods: Two hundred samples of ear discharge from patients with OM were collected and examined during the period from February 2010 to February 2011. Each patient filled a questionnaire. Results: Distribution of OM according to region of living was statistically significant (P value = 0.001). Bacteria isolated in this study were mainly gram positive (52.8%); Staphylococcus aureus was the most common isolate (43.4%).
Conclusions: The bacteria isolated in this study were mainly gram positive (52.8%); Staphylococcus aureus was the most common isolate (43.4%). 47.1% of the bacteria isolated was gram -ve .Pseudomonas aeurginosa represent the majority with 29.3%. Ofloxacin and Gentamicin were the most effective antibiotics for most bacterial isolated.
