Abstract

The aim of the study is to investigate the efficacy of brainstorming through cooperative learning in developing innovative thinking skills in 11th  grade female students of Science stream in Chemistry.  The research sample included 60 female students of 11th grade –science stream. The experiment group was composed of 30 female students from Martyr Ahmad Husain Hameed school and another 30 female students in the control group from Safiyah bint Abdulmutalib school.  As an experimental study, the researchers adopted the two-group, and pre and post design.  To test the research hypotheses, the researchers developed the research tool which is a test on innovative thinking assessing five major skills which are: fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration and sensing problems. After checking validity, and establishing test-retest reliability  of the tool which was 0.88, the test was given to the students twice, before and after the experiment. Data were analyzed using means, standard deviation, T-test and Cohen coefficient to interpret the effect of size. Results reveal a statistically significant difference in the mean scores of the experiment and control groups in the post test in innovative thinking skills as a whole and every individual skill as well in favor of the experiment group. A statistically  significant difference was also found in the mean scores of the two groups in the pre and posttest in innovative thinking skills as a whole and every individual skill. There was also a statistically significant difference in the gain difference between the pre- and posttests of innovative thinking skills as a whole and every individual skill in favor of the experiment group. The researchers concluded the study with a number of recommendations and suggestions among which: making all means and activities that contribute to developing innovative thinking skills in students available, and conducting similar studies to investigate the effect of brainstorming through cooperative learning in developing innovative thinking for different samples of different educational stages
