The study adopted the descriptive approach and data analysis reveal that there is a large number of factors behind this problem as seen by the students. Results indicate that economic factors are major causes for the decline in internal proficiency of preparatory year students such as job opportunities for the unqualified. Social factors are also another cause for low internal proficiency which were evident in the absence of serious planning of students' free times and parents misunderstanding of their children's problems. Findings also reveal academic factors as causes for the decline in internal proficiency such as admitting students to departments against their wishes, low English proficiency, and the gap between school and university study systems. Results also show that there some personal factors that contribute to the decline in internal proficiency of students of the preparatory year which are evident in some students' low motivation for learning and poor ambitions. Family factors are also a cause as seen in the occupation of some students with family needs and the family- member separation as a result of divorce.
