The Colors of Sorrow and Elegy in the Poetry of Nizar Qabbani: A Critical Study
##plugins.themes.bootstrap3.article.main##
Abstract
This study analyzes the elegies of Nizar Qabbani to answer its main question: where do sadness and lamentation appear in his poetry? It examines a wide range of his elegies, rich in connotations and allusions that reflect his poetic and emotional experience. Qabbani’s life was marked by crises and tragic events, and his romantic, sensitive nature deeply shaped his expression of sorrow.
Entitled “Colors of Sadness and Lamentation in the Poetry of Nizar Qabbani: A Critical Reading,” the study consists of an introduction, two sections, and a conclusion. The introduction outlines the topic, significance, and methodology. The first section presents a historical overview of elegy, its concept, examples, and a brief biography of the poet, including his upbringing, literary status, and achievements. The second section analyzes his most prominent elegies to identify patterns of sadness and lamentation.
The study concludes that Qabbani confronted real loss—the deaths of close family members and leaders—with denial, insecurity, helplessness, and anger. However, death in his poetry extends beyond literal loss to include themes of love, women’s struggles, and the realities of Arab society, such as poverty, oppression, and betrayal.
