Abstract
This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of the academic advisor's role in enhancing academic motivation among at-risk students at Dhofar University in the Sultanate of Oman, and to understand the challenges they face. The study relied on the descriptive-analytical approach, using the 'questionnaire' as the main tool for data collection, and it was applied to a sample consisting of 100 male and female students at-risk during the first semester of the academic year 2025/2026.
The results showed that the problems of at-risk students were high, with an arithmetic mean of (3.97), most notably weak time management skills, unclear academic goals, and low motivation toward studying, which leads to academic stumbling. Regarding the roles played by the academic advisor to enhance academic motivation, this question had an arithmetic mean of (3.94). The most prominent roles included helping the student develop a realistic study plan, providing appropriate guidance to help students overcome academic difficulties, acting as a liaison between the student and the academic administration, and encouraging students to participate in university activities to boost academic motivation. The study recommended the need to develop academic guidance programs and intensify training for advisors in psychological and motivational support skills. It also called for the importance of early identification of at-risk students and activating electronic systems to monitor them, in addition to reducing the guidance workload on faculty members to ensure the quality of communication with students and help them succeed and continue in their educational journey.
